Probably some useful additional information to this:

The above is only true for POP accounts.

The dialogue where you put the mailbox name ('Add mailbox') can be
either relative to your HOME directory, or it can take a full path.

Several POP accounts can happily share a single mailbox. You can make
sub-folders in Inbox/ Sent/ Drafts/ and Queue/ for each of your
accounts and then use each account's preferences to use the correct
folders.
