Sorry for not providing a solution, or perhaps it could lead to one -
in the meantime you can (try to) use the GTK2_RC_FILES variable to
force a different theme than the one used by the desktop environment.

$ GTK2_RC_FILES=/path/to/theme/gtk-2.0/gtkrc claws-mail
