Thanks, that got me searching the preferences again. 

Configuration --> Preferences --> Display -->Summaries

Under 'Mark messages as Read' I had 'Only when opened in a new window,
or replied to' selected. I have now moved the selection to 'When
selected, after n seconds' and it now works as I want.

The preferences menu has so many items in it, and I am still learning
about them.
