Here's the situation so far.

Running in debug, the message I get when claws hangs indicates that
there's another copy of claws-mail running.

Here's what I did next:

dan at Arisia:~> ps aux | grep claws-mail
dan      13182  0.0  0.0   8308   860 pts/3    S+   17:26   0:00 grep
--color=auto claws-mail dan at Arisia:~> kill 13182
bash: kill: (13182) - No such process

OK. Next I tried killall:

dan at Arisia:~> killall claws-mail
claws-mail: no process found
