[Users] marking reply text within a message

OK , lets turn it on its head.
Each key press starts  life as an ASCII and then UTF-8 encoded, there are quite a few codes which
are no longer used, as there were for teleprinter usage, its only really CR, BS, TAB and LF that
used these days,  
How does CM handle hidden characters ? does it try to print them or treat them as a space,
Moreover, more importantly, what does outlook do with them, would they remain intact in a reply?
If so it would not be too difficult to mark the beginning and end of a block of text, so when 
received within a reply the originating message could be recognized as part of the originating
message
I've never used Outlook so I 've no idea what can be done with it.
