I am pretty sure it has something to do with permissions. The literal
username and groupname is actually used by the OS numerically so if
your numerical value for user and group are different on your old
computer compared to your new computer claws will not be able to read
and write any messages in the folders.

How to fix: Shutdown claws and do the following:
sudo chown -R <username>:<group> ~/.claws-mail

you user and group info can be found running id:

My computer:
$ id
uid=1006(mir) gid=1000(mir)
groups=1000(mir),4(adm),7(lp),20(dialout),21(fax),24(cdrom),25(floppy),26(tape),27(sudo),29(audio),30(dip),44(video),46(plugdev),100(users),104(polkituser),115(netdev),121(fuse),122(scanner),126(vboxusers),129(androiddev),134(kvm),1008(dba),1009(usbfs)

compare the literal uid and gid to the old computer and you will
discover they are different.
