I just user the standard layout , which puts the folder pane about 3 1/2 "
wide.
Are you using a Radeon card ??, that did weird things with box sizes.
I replaced on the main machine with a nvidia card for that reason.
There is something strange with gnome3 on debian at the moment with radeon
drivers.

Are you in fallback mode or normal ?
