  It works as expected here with the default settings of Gmail IMAP, so my
  first suspect would be some IMAP setting on the server. This is a wild
  guess as I have no idea which configurations Virginmedia makes available
  to you.

  Check your keyboard shortcuts in the menus, you very likely have
  inadvertently set the T as shortcut of something. Remove it by focusing
  the menu where it was set and pressing delete key.
