Another possibility could be gio. If claws loads libgtk2 or libgnome2 and that loads gvfs and this contains a gio module now. Could that be polling RAID mounts in a buggy way ? And Kernel 3.1 seem to have RAID bugs too. btw. @Paul: I don't know iostat, but it sounds interesting, is there a debian package ?
