What about those enclosing folders which also contain emails?  This
proposal would be confusing for such an enclosing folder...  I have lots
of them and this would require me to change how I use CM.

Although I disagree with the proposed solution, and don't really need
such a feature, I'd like to put out a different proposal which would
not require any user to change their folder structure to avoid the
unintended consequences of the OP's, and in a less confusing way...

Hopefully someone has a better idea; but mine would be to change the
[already on-screen] 'message summary' from:

  0 new, 0 unread, 166 total (754.98KB)

to something like (too long to avoid wrap here):

  [ 3 new, 8 unread, 638 total (20.16MB) ] + \
      0 new, 0 unread, 166 total (754.98KB)

and/or put this additional info in the Message Summary which pops up
when the mouse hovers over that summary.  i.e., change it

from:                      to:

Message Summary            Message Summary (sub-folders: 3, depth: 1)

Of course, (and the reason for "depth:" above) there's the problem of:
     forms           or:     forms
         2009                    2009
             Q1                      Jan
             Q2                      Feb
             Q3                      Mar
             Q4                      Apr
          ...                        ...

So, the "total" output probably should include _every_ sub-folder, no
matter how deep...  That would give an overall total for "forms" when
"forms" is the selected folder, and sub-totals for each of "2009",
"2010", etc when one of these becomes the active folder.

Oops...  this would imply adding the summary when "Mailbox (MH)" is the
selected 'folder'...  :)
