Got it! Thanks for the details.

I finally found the correct file (...mhhcgjb9.default/mimeTypes.rdf). I
started by making a copy for safety, then opening it in nano, but
finally decided that Gedit would be easier (it is a long file). I
searched on *volution, expecting that it would point to Evolution, but
found nothing. Eventually it occurred to me to search on "mailto." That
resulted in several locations, including the following:

<RDF:Description RDF:about="urn:scheme:externalApplication:mailto"
NC:prettyName="Claws Mail" NC:path="/usr/bin/claws-mail" />
  <RDF:Description RDF:about="urn:scheme:ircs"
                   NC:value="ircs">
    <NC:handlerProp RDF:resource="urn:scheme:handler:ircs"/>
  </RDF:Description>

Originally the prettyName line pointed to
~/.local/share/Claws-Mail.desktop. I changed it to the binary (as
above), and it is now working as it is supposed to. And in Edit >
Preferences > Applications > mailto the dropdown is now set to "use
claws-mail."

Reading through the mimeTypes.rdf file I found tons of references
that are probably wrong. For example, PDFs point to Adobe Reader 8
installed in my home folder, but I currrently have version 9. And there
were hundreds of references to various components of OpenOffice.org,
which I uninstalled and replaced with LibreOffice after the upgrade
from Fedora 14 to Fedora 16. Now that I know where the mimeTypes.rdf
file is I may be able to fix some of these other issues.
